3 Steps to Avoid Tax Scams this Tax Season

With the employer deadline of mailing W-2s rapidly approaching we are all getting the feeling that tax season is upon us. For some, this time of year is met with excitement as people are entitled to refunds. Others greet this time of year with dread and a sense of impending doom as they know they are behind on their taxes. Unfortunately, scammers thrive on these negative emotions. At Complete Tax and Notary Services, we want to help you and your loved ones avoid falling prey to a scam. Today, we review three steps to take to avoid scams this tax season.

I) Avoid the Latest SSN Scam

In late 2019, an updated Social Security number scam swept the country. Scammers claim that they can suspend or cancel your Social Security number if you’re behind on your taxes. No matter what someone on the phone says, do not make a payment to any person or organization other than the U.S. Treasury.

II) Don’t Respond to Emails

One of the most important steps you can take to protect your money and identity during tax season is to not respond to unsolicited emails. The Internal Revenue System will never send you any unsolicited email demanding payment. Moreover, they will not require a particular payment method, such as a prepaid debit card.

III) Donate to Real Charities

An unfortunately common scam involves criminals posing as charities. This scam may be performed via social media, telephone, email or in-person. One variation of this scam seeks to steal your identity. An alternative seeks to take your hard-earned money so you can help those in need and reduce your tax liability. If a “charity” contacts you, search for them using the tax-exempt organization database provided by the IRS.
