When you start a small business, you’re probably going to have a lot of questions. Unfortunately, there is no rule book to follow when you start a business. Different people recommend different things, depending on their business style. And the fact is that even people who have completely opposite management styles can be successful in running a business.
Aggressive Management Styles
You’ve probably heard of or known people who were quite aggressive in their business style. As soon as they enter their offices, everyone is alert. And if anyone makes even the slightest mistake, they are reprimanded for it. It doesn’t make for a great office atmosphere but it does get the job done.
Laid Back Management Styles
Then there are people who believe in having a good company culture and encouraging communication between people in the workplace. They urge everyone to speak up with their ideas, give people flexible timings and listen patiently to ideas, complaints, requests, etc. In the long run, a company culture like this is more likely to work.
Can Management Get Too Laid Back?
But of course, it is also possible to lean too far the other way. While some people might be too strict and too critical, some people might just not be critical at all. No matter how inefficient or how unpunctual an employee may be, they’ll try to be understanding of them. And this can cause a person to stop taking you seriously.
Balancing Your Management Style
So when you start a business, it’s important to have a good, understanding attitude and create a good company culture. But it’s also important to be clear about what you expect out of an employee and reprimand them (no matter how distasteful this might be to you) when it’s absolutely necessary.
Being Detail-Oriented with Finances
Remember that there are certain aspects of your business, such as the accounts and the finances, where you can’t afford to make mistakes. And, in fact, if you make a mistake in this aspect, you are likely to pay the price later on. Not only are you more likely to run out of funds at a time when you can least afford, it but you might also get penalized if there is a mistake in your taxes.
