Getting a Straight Answer to Your Small Business Startup Questions

When you start a small business, you may have several questions to which it might be nice to receive a “yes” or “no” answer. The fact is that most answers that advisors and consultants give you start with “it depends.” And as a business owner, you might find this frustrating.

Sometimes, it may seem like no one wants to give you a straight answer because they’re afraid that you’ll blame them if something goes wrong. But the fact is that a lot of things do fall under the “it depends” category. However, here are a few things to which you can get a categorical “yes” or “no”:

  1. Should I Start a Small Business? No matter what kind of business idea you have, it doesn’t hurt to put it into practice. This doesn’t mean that you have to sink all your savings into a business which might or might not take off. But if you have a good business idea and are willing to put some work into realizing your vision, then why not?
  2. Should I Have a Business Plan? You should never start a full-fledged business without a business plan. Sure, you can do some freelance work without a business plan, but eventually, your freelance work may increase to such an extent that it takes up at least half of your time and requires you to hire more people. At this point, come up with a business plan so that you know exactly how you plan to grow and develop your business.
  3. Should I Have Savings/Investors? There are businesses that you can start inexpensively, from your garage. But it’s a good idea to have some savings or to find someone who is willing to invest in your business as a silent partner. Even if you don’t end up spending too much to start your business, it’s a good idea to have some money available to cover any unexpected expenses.
  4. Should I Have an Accountant? You need someone to manage your finances. You can choose to be your own accountant if you have the necessary skills. Or you can hire an employee who does accounting, among other things. Or you can outsource the accounting part of your business. Just make sure that the books are kept in good order.
  5. Should I Expect to Break Even Right Away? Any business needs some time to take off. You need to set up your office, hire people, get raw materials, start making your product, get new clients, come up with a marketing plan etc. All this is going to take time. You’re going to eventually figure out what people are looking for and how to give it to them. But Rome wasn’t built in a day. The same goes for your business.
