Bookkeeping vs. Accounting: Do You Know the Differences?

A nonprofit organization (NPO) is an entity that has been exempted from paying tax by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) because it works towards benefiting the public and furthering the social cause. These businesses embody the “best of America”; as such, they transform beliefs into actions through donations and fundraising activities. How to create a nonprofit organization

 

  1. Do research

Like any other business, you should do a little digging before you think of starting an NPO. Generally, find out which area of the public needs your help, if there are other charity organizations in that region, and state requirements for creating an NPO.

 

2. Build a solid foundation

Here, you need a solid foundation with a crystal clear vision and a strong mission statement. You will also choose your organization’s name, state the problem and devise a solution to the problem. While creating a name, make sure no one else has ever used it; for this, check with respective authorities or visit our accountants for guidance. Also, use a name that does not violate other citizens’ rights.

 

3. Incorporate the organization

At this stage, bring onboard accounting and law firms to help draft the Articles of Associations and reduce the risk of making costly mistakes. You will also be required to submit or do the following by some states; 

  • Certificate of Disclosure
  • Proof of corporate name
  • Filing fee
  • Appoint directors– in Massachusetts, one director is enough to get you started, but some states may require three directors.  
  • Get a tax identification number  
  • Prepare and adopt bylaws ( your organization’s operating manual)
  • Prepare and adopt conflict of interest 
  • Lastly, publish the Articles of Association in the local newspaper.

 

4. File IRS Documents

After registering your corporation, you need to receive the tax exemption status from the IRS. First, get the Employer Identification Number (EIN), Form 1023, and Application for Recognition for Exemption as per section 501 (c) (3).

 

5. Comply with state requirements

Once the IRS approves your organization’s existence, ensure that it is exempted from paying tax on its sales and profits by complying with state requirements for establishing an NPO. Also, remember to get permits for your operations.
